The Comcast Sphere is the result of an extraordinary collaboration among Foster+Partners, Metcalfe, Criterion Acoustics, SH Acoustics, Universal, and Comcast Labs in 2019. Housed in the lobby of Philadelphia’s tallest building, the Comcast Technology Center—also home to the Four Seasons Hotel—this architectural marvel is officially known as “The Universal Sphere.” Rising three stories high, the orb creates a captivating presence within the building while serving as a cutting-edge venue for immersive experiences.
At the heart of the Comcast Sphere is a state-of-the-art theater that hosts an immersive cinematic experience produced by Steven Spielberg. This installation represents a fusion of art, technology, and architectural innovation. Criterion Acoustics played a pivotal role in this project, working in close collaboration with Foster+Partners and Metcalfe Architecture and Design to ensure that the Sphere’s environment was acoustically precise and performance-optimized.
A key highlight of the project was the development of acoustic solutions that addressed the unique challenges posed by the Sphere’s design. Special attention was given to the integration of automatic sliding entry doors and the acoustically complex spherical shell. These elements required innovative approaches to seamlessly blend functionality with the sphere’s aesthetic, ensuring that sound quality was maintained at the highest standard.
The venue is not only a testament to advanced architectural and acoustic engineering but also a dynamic space for innovation. It hosts “The Power of I” virtual reality experience, which is presented 30 times a day, offering visitors a glimpse into the future of immersive digital storytelling. This blend of real-world design excellence with cutting-edge technology underscores the Comcast Sphere as a landmark achievement in modern architecture and interactive media.
