Criterion Acoustics Delivers World-Class Recording Studios for MacEwan University’s Allard Hall
Criterion Acoustics (CA) has played a pivotal role in the creation of Allard Hall, the cutting-edge performing arts center at MacEwan University. Designed in collaboration with Vancouver-based architects Bing Thom, the $143 million facility stands as Western Canada’s most significant new audio and performing arts complex in years.
Opened in 2017, Allard Hall features state-of-the-art recording studios that cater to both professional and educational needs. Criterion Acoustics provided expert recording studio design and oversaw AV system integration for the entire facility. The program includes two interconnected studios equipped for full audio recording across Allard Hall’s theaters, recital halls, and black box spaces via MADI and Dante protocols.
The flagship A Studio is anchored by a 32-channel API Legacy Plus Console—the first of its kind deployed—paired with ATC SCM 150A monitors, and features a live room, two isolation booths, and a machine room. Complementing this is the B Studio, outfitted with an SSL-AWS 900 console, designed for first- and second-year student training. Each space incorporates live and neutral acoustic characteristics, with mid-band reverberation times ranging from 0.6 seconds in the live A room to 1 second in the live B room.
“A recording studio designed for instructional purposes has specific requirements,” explained David Kotch, President of Criterion Acoustics. “We designed larger spaces to accommodate student groups and implemented multiple displays for effective teaching, all while maintaining zero compromises on critical listening capabilities.”
With its advanced design and cutting-edge features, Allard Hall redefines educational and professional standards for recording and performing arts facilities in Canada.
