One of the world’s most famous musical addresses has a notable new addition: The accomplished mastering engineer Andreas K. Meyer has arrived in Harlem, bringing a multifaceted new audio facility to the neighborhood.
Criterion Acoustics (CA) was chosen as the acoustical architect for Meyer’s Swan Studios, located on the northern border of New York City’s landmark Central Park. With their deep experience in recording studio design and mastering studio design, the firm executed a comprehensive program for the multilevel space, including full internal room acoustics, sound isolation and mechanical noise control. CA also designed and built custom acoustical paneling for the rooms.
Swan Studios’ centerpiece is a mastering suite for Meyer, renowned for his elite discography including Hilary Hahn, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Essa-Pekka Salonen, Arcadi Volodos, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic, The Boys Choir of Harlem, and many more classical mastering and jazz mastering clients. The facility also includes an additional reissue mastering/archiving suite, plus an analog tracking/mixing/transfer studio.
A GRAMMY Award-winning engineer, Meyer launched his career at NYC’s renowned Sony Music Studios, then operated a personal facility in Long Island City before committing to a significantly larger studio in Harlem. “I knew this was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime chance – my goal was to build one of the best studios in the city,” Meyer says. “Criterion Acoustics helped to make these fantastic-sounding rooms.”
Total Accuracy Required
Meyers’ objective for his Swan Studio mastering suite was uncompromising: achieve 100% acoustical accuracy. “I wanted to make sure that what I was hearing out of my speakers is exactly what’s there,” Meyer says. “It needed to be really well balanced. It also had to have atmosphere, like an amazing-sounding living room and not an anechoic chamber.
“Dave Kotch of Criterion Acoustics fully realized my vision,” Meyer continues. “He tailored the room exactly for my B&W D3 speakers, and the results have exceeded my expectations. When I listened to material that I had previously mastered, I heard new details in the music that I hadn’t heard before. These rooms are actually upping my game.”
CA proved to be the ideal acoustical designer for New York City’s newest mastering studio, from start to finish. “Criterion Acoustics treated Swan Studios like a priority from the preliminary walkthrough to the architectural drawings, testing, and tuning,” says Meyer. “They were hands on with my project, every step of the way.”
